Ladies battle past Clonbony    (Sunday 28-June-2009)

Fulham Irish 7-11 Clonbony 5-06

Doing Clonbony a favour by switching the fixture back to Sunday morning, Fulham Irish Ladies took to the field with the 13 players who had not changed plans to participate in this Provincial Junior Championship fixture.

Clonbony started strongly and scored a point through Sheila Sexton in the opening minute. A couple of missed chances followed before Michelle Murphy scored a point for Fulham Irish in the 5th minute. Sexton scored again to restore the lead in the 6th. With the Fulham Irish girls now settling in, they started to possess the ball, scoring points through Paula Cuinnea and Lead Horan. A free for Clonbony in the 17th minute was punted towards goal and dropped into the net. Good play involving Aoife Synnott, Cuinnea and Murphy released Horan to score her first goal of the game in the 20th minute. A strong six minutes of Fulham Irish pressure followed with Horan adding 2 points while Murphy also added a point. With half time approaching, an attack by Clonbony should have seen the ball cleared on numerous occasions before the ball reached Rita Biggins in front of goal and she made no mistake, crashing it past Doyle to the net, leaving the half time score level, 1-6 to 2-03.

With temperatures soaring, players who were working so hard we wilting in the conditions but with such a strong effort by the team, everyone kept going to the end. A blistering start to the half saw Niamh Kelly win the throw in, the ball moved down field and Murphy drove to the net. a poor kick out to Horan saw her score a point. Another kick out win by Kelly saw Cuinnea and Synnott help the ball forward for Murphy to rattle the net again. All this good work was alsmost immediately undone as Clonbony scored 2 goals of their own. The first , a save from Doyle buried on the rebound and the second a high shot that eluded the keeper.

More good play from Murphy saw her score her 3rd goal of the half. She added a point as well, as did Horan. Clonbony continued to battle adding another point and a goal from Mary Igoe to close the margin again. The last six minutes would be long to Horan as she punished the opposition with a hatrick of goals. Murphy exchanged points with Sexton as the game reached its conclusion.

In a performance where every player made a massive contribution, as well as those mentioned the following stood out, Leah Williams, Rebecca Taylor and Liz Spelman. For Clonbony, Caroline Rynne, Sheila Casserly and Majella Costelloe played well.

Team: B Doyle, B Doherty, L Williams, R Ryan, A Kelly, R Taylor, L Spelman, A Synnott, P Cuinnea, N Kelly, M Murphy, E Sinnott, L Horan
