Ladies qualify for Junior Championship final (Sunday 19-July-2009)
Fulham Irish 3-11 Tara Junior 0-08
In blustery conditions at Greenford on Sunday, Fulham Irish Ladies
powered into the Junior Championship final with a strong attacking
first half performance while defending strongly against the elements
in the second half.
Leah Horan opened the scoring with a point in the 2nd minute. A strong run by Colette Rice gave Tara junior an equaliser soon after. The next 20 minutes would be complete Fulham Irish domination as they created 16 scoring chancesbut only converted 6, 1-02 for Horan, !-01 for Jessica Hyde and a point for Norma Kearney. In that period, Tara only created 2 chances, the best a drive at goal from Rice which was turned round the post by Brigid Doyle in the Fulham Irish goal.
The last seven minutes of the half was more balanced as the teams traded scores. Rice added a couple of points for Tara and then set up a point for Yvonne Morley. Fulham Irish would finish the stronger with a goal from Michelle Murphy, 2 points for Horan and 1 each for Hyde and Sarah Allen leaving the half time score 3-10 to 0-04.
Now playing against the breeze, the Fulham Irish girls set out to defend the lead built up in the first half. The forwards dropped deep and forced Tara girls to shoot from pressured situations. Rice was responsible for most of their efforts but the shooting was poor and she only registered 1 point in the opening 12 minutes of the half. A rare raid down the length of the pitch by Fulham Irish allowed Kearney through t score a point in the 13th minute, the teams only score of the half. As the game reached its conclusion, tara added 3 more points, midfielder Nicole Borratti at the heart of all the good play.
As well as those mentioned, Leah Williams, Rebecca Taylor, Alison Donnelly, Niamh Kelly and Paula Cuinnea played well for Fulham Irish while Grainne O'Sullivan, Geraldine Leonard and Hannah Tracey tried hardest for Tara Junior.
