Ladies suffer Final defeat to Kingdom/Kerry Gaels    (Sunday 6-September-2009)

Fulham Irish 0-06 Kingdom/Kerry Gaels 2-06

For the second year in succession, the Fulham Irish Ladies came up short in their quest to win the London Junior Championship.

Playing with the assistance of the slight breeze, Fulham Irish started strongly, dominating the possession but not creating the scoring chances. Jessica Hyde opened the scoring with a fine point in the 6th minute, running onto the ball, carrying forward and drilling over. A free by Leah Horan followed in the 11th minute to increase the lead. It would be the 15th minute before Kingdom/Kerry Gaels got their first point through Ann Woulfe, escaping the determined marking of Olivia Walsh for the first time. Almost immediately the scores were level, Linda Cummings firing over. With chances at a premium, good defending saw shots go wide before Horan regained the lead for Fulham Irish. Winning the subsequent kick out, Fulham Irish powered forward again, Nicola Traynor, usually full back but lining out at midfield, score a fine point. The jig afterwards was understandable as the last time she scored was U-10s!With the half in injury time, an unlucky break of the ball saw Woulfe get past Walsh and her run towards goal ended with a strong shot to the net, giving Kingdom/Kerry Gaels an undeserved half time lead.

The second half started with the substitution of Marieke Johnson who needed to leave for work. Fulham Irish had the first attack of the half, Norma Kearney's effort coming back off the post to Paula Cuinnea, whose effort came back off the same post. Luckily, Traynor was on had to score her second point of the day. The killer second goal for Kingdom/Kerry Gaels came in the 7th minute, Sarah Kelly getting loose from the marking of Sarah Allen for the first time in the game calmly rolling the ball to the net. Cummings added another point before Horan scored a free for Fulham Irish in the 1oth minute of the half, a score which would prove to her teams last meaningful attack.

The final 20 minutes of the game belonged to Kingdom/Kerry Gaels with the Fulham Irish girls continuing to defend strongly only allowing three points to be scored, two from Woulfe. The final twelve minutes of the game were scoreless as Kingdom/Kerry gaels created 6 chances but missed them all.

As well as those mentioned, Brigid Doyle, Lisa Moran, Blathnaid Farrell, Marina Quinlan, Grace Foley and Michelle Murphy played well for Fulham Irish while Aisling McGeehan, Ciara McAree and Aoife O'Connor shone for kingdom/Kerry Gaels.
