Seniors defeat Tir Chonaill Gaels in Tipperary cup    (Sunday 19-April-2009)

Fulham Irish 2-08 Tir Chonaill Gaels 1-07

In another tight battle between these clubs, Fulham Irish and Tir Chonaill Gaels served up some good football in a committed affair. The Greenford men, assisted by the breeze started strongly with centre back Stevie Boyle popping up for the opening score. Noel Nicholson quickly replied for Fulham after good work by Mark McElroy and Liam Barry, steeping up from the reserves to fill in for missing players.Brian Corry added a point for Tir Chonaill in the 5th minute before a shot from JP O'Donnell, adjudged wide by the umpire was given by the referee as a point. Liam Gavaghan kicked another minor in the 10th minute to extend the lead. A couple of misses by Chris Moroney followed before Fulham Irish came to life in the 16th minute.

Barry earned a yellow card with a justified rant at the referee which seemed to spur the Fulham lads to find their gears. Neat play found Barry free to fire over a point which he quickly followed up in the 20th minute with another point. The best move of the game followed with a drive out of defence by Roger Morgan saw fluid football relase Dave Connolly to finish stylishly to the net. Nicholson fired over another point late in the half to leave Fulham with a 2 point lead at the break.

The second half started with missed chances for both teams before Nicholson extended the Fulham lead. James O'Connell followed up with a point Tir Chonaill. Fulham Irish dominated the next 12 minutes, scoring 4 points without reply, Barry adding 2 more and Brendan Quinn taking 2 points too, one from a free. The Gaels made a break downfield in the 22nd minute where Colin Reilly dived in to intercept the ball but was agonisingly short, allowing O'Donnell in for a goal to give his team renewed hope. He followed up with a point 2 minutes later to reduce the deficit to 3 points with time running out.

The final few minutes saw big tackles flying in as Tir Chonaill Gaels flooded forwarded. At a breakdown in play, a swift move up the field saw a foul on Quinn. Dissent by the Gaels brought the free forward and Nicholson didn't need a second invitation to extend the lead to 4 points.

On the kick out the ball broke dangerously to O'Connell and as he raced towards goal, he was heavily tackled by Barry, who received his 2nd yellow and was off. The resulting free was dropped into the square and a foul result in a penalty, which Derek Sheridan saved to his left from O'Connell.

As well as those mentioned, Ken McGrath and Diarmaid Maher had good games for Fulham Irish.
