Wasteful Fulham Irish go down narrowly in Championship opener (Saturday 18-July-2009)
Fulham Irish 1-07 St Brendans 1-08
In a scrappy Senior Championship game, St Brendans won the day with a
late goal and point giving them a narrow victory.
Fulham Irish were quick out of the blocks, Noel Nicholson causing havoc as he creating scores for Harry Murphy and Brendan Quinn. A series of misses followed before substitute Adrian Brett scored a fine point for St Brendans on the turn in the 16th minute, his teams only score of the half.
The last 10 minutes of the first half belonged exclusively to Fulham Irish as they created 11 scoring chances, 4 of them being converted, points for John Fitzgerald and Andrew Davidson and a pair from Nicholson. The half time lead 0-06 0-01.
Now playing with the wind, St Brendans started the second half strongly with every ball breaking their way. With ten minutes of the half gone, the teams were level and Fulham Irish had not had an attack of note. Paddy Bowles with 3 and a point each for Killian Phair and Brett the St Brendans scorers.
A period of strong defence from both teams followed before a devastating run from Nicholson saw him beat 4 defenders before feeding Quinn, whose sidestep opened up the goal and he finished expertly. A point from Nicholson followed to extend the lead to 4 points again.
With the game heading towards its conclusion, the defensive effort was strong and chances were hard to come by. Then, a hopeful kick towards goal by Cathal Donohue was deflected past Mark Daly by the efforts of Eoin Davis to stop it. Almost immediatedly, Phair was impeded in the scoring zone as he ducked inside and he fired the free over to level the game. With the game in injury time, 2 chances for Fulham Irish were booted wide by Nicholson and Murphy. Down the other end, Davis was fouled a couple of times before the referee penalised him for over carrying. Phair done the rest and St Brendans had the win.
As well as those mentioned, Ken McGrath, Eamon O Cuiv, Fergus O'Domhnaill, Gary O'Hare, Barry McCaffrey and Conor McClean done well for Fulham Irish while Fergal Greenan and Joe Coulter played well for St Brendans.
