Ladies lose Tom O'Connor Cup final    (Sunday 2-August-2009)

Fulham Irish 2-06 Kingdom/Kerry Gaels 5-13 Kingdom/Kerry Gaels took the upper hand in the first final to be played between the two clubs this year.

Following a very competitive first half where both teams created 13 scoring chances, Kingdom/Kerry Gaels led by 3 points as they showed the greater composure in the scoring zone. Early Kingdom/Kerry points from Sarah Kelly and Linda Cummings were canceled out be a goal from Niamh Kelly who bundled the ball to the net. Points from Kelly and Aoife O'Connor restored the lead before Leah Horan leveled the game again. Roisin McEvoy burst through from midfield to score a point before a series of blocks from Lisa Moran kept the ball from the net. The ball broke again to Cummings who slammed it to the net. Bridget Grennan added another point to extend the lead. The last five minutes of the half were owned by Fulham Irish. Starting with a point from Sarah Allen, the best move of the game followed as Jessica Hyde won possession out wide, ran directly at goal, played a one two with Horan and then finished well to the net. 5 successive chances created after the goal were all wasted with poor finishing.

The second half started with Kingdom/Kerry Gaels winning the throw in, feeding the ball to Ann Woulfe, whose blistering shot was too hard for Brigid Doyle to stop. Marina Quinlan popped a point over before a couple of points from Kelly extended the lead. A sliced kick out went straight to Sharon Murphy and she shot to the net. The Fulham Irish girls immediately went down field and scored a point through Horan. Cummings added another point before Horan replied from a free.

The last 12 minutes belonged exclusively to Kingdom/Kerry Gaels as they added 2-02 to their tally, the goals coming from Woulfe and Kelly.

With 34 days to the Junior Championship final, the Ladies will have to work hard to turn around this deficit but in sport, anything is possible.
