Ladies lose in Provincial Championship (Sunday 13-September-2009)
Fulham Irish 2-08 John Mitchells, Birmingham 5-05
On a sunny afternoon in Birmingham on Saturday, Fulham Irish ladies
went down to a frustrating defeat to John Mitchells, Birmingham.
Playing against the breeze, Fulham Irish dominated early possession
but failed to convert any of the chances. In the 6th minute, the
Birmingham side took the lead after a hopeful shot by midfielder
Michelle O'Donnell eluded the defence and goalkeeper to nestle in the
net. O'Donnell won the subsequent kick out and pointed to extend the
lead. Points from Paula Cuinnea and Jessica Hyde opened the Fulham
Irish account shortly after. Laura Maguire scored a point from a free
before another series of misses for Fulham Irish. Breena Murphy added
a point for John Mitchells before more poor defending allowed them in
for their second goal. The half ended with a penalty to Fulham Irish,
Olivia Walsh fouled as she burst forward. Hyde's effort was deflected
over the bar to leave the half time score 2-02 to 0-04.
The second half started poorly for Fulham Irish as two more sloppy goals were conceded in the opening five minutes to leave a mountain to climb. Burt climb, they did as a golden five minutes saw 2-03 scored in quick fashion, both goals coming from Hyde, 2 points from Maguire and a point from Norma Kearney. All this work would be undone in an instant as John Mitchells managed to work the ball down field and score another goal and two points to open up a seven point lead again.
With time running out, the Fulham Irish girls continued to attack but were undone by a couple of dubious refereeing decisions. Firstly, as Hyde raced through on goal, the goalkeeper rushed out and flattened her, the referee signaled a penalty but bizarrely reversed the decision and threw the ball up as Fulham Irish questioned why it was not at least a yellow card. Then, Maguire won the ball and floated a fine effort to the net only for the whistle to go for a dubious injury to an opposition player. Hyde and Kearney added late points to reduce the deficit.
As well as those mentioned, Blathnaid Farrell, playing through illness and Sarah Allen had good games for Fulham Irish.
