Seniors exit Championship (Sunday 2-August-2009)
Fulham Irish 0-08 Tir Chonaill Gaels 0-11
In a game played in glorious sunshine at Ruislip on Sunday afternoon
but ruined by an inept refereeing performance, Fulham Irish exited the
2009 Senior Championship as they lost out to Tir Chonaill Gaels.
The rivalry between these two clubs ensures that these games are
intense and the teams go out to hit each other hard in what are always
tight games. What these occasions do not need are officials who cannot
handle the pressure of the big game atmosphere.
The first half was very defensive as the creation of scoring chances
was low, each team only creating 5 chances in the half. David Cassidy
opened the scoring for Tir Chonaill Gaels with a free in the 2nd
minute. This was quickly canceled out by a point from Dave Connolly,
who ran on to the break from John Fizgerald on the edge of the square.
It would be the 12th minute before Conor Beirne popped up on the right
to receive the ball and fire over. Kevin McMenamin escaped the
clutches of Gary O'Hare to extend the lead in the 18th minute. Another
point from Beirne in the 25th minute followed before Fulham irish took
a couple of late chances through Brendan Quinn and Connolly.
Fulham Irish started the half strongly but had a couple of wides from
Quinn before Kevin Downes scored a fine point. Fitzgerald added a point
for Fulham Irish before Noel Nicholson added a free to level the game.
Gary McCloskey found himself in space and he drilled the ball over to
restore the lead. Points from Cassidy and McMenamin followed to open
the lead up to three again. With 10 minutes remaining, Eamon O Cuiv
burst forward to score a point. This was quickly followed by a super
effort from Connolly.
With the game heading for its conclusion, McMenamin drove a fine
effort over the bar from a sideline ball out on the left. Downes and
Cassidy added points before Donal Conlon completed the scoring with a
last minute point.
As well as those mentioned, Ken McGrath, Colin Reilly, Kevin
McElroy,Barry McCaffrey and Andrew Davidson played well for Fulham
Irish while Paddy Callaghan, Stephen Boyle, Shaun Campbell and Gary
O'Kane had good games for Tir Chonaill Gaels.
