Tipperary Cup final lost narrowly after Extra time    (Sunday 21-June-2009)

Fulham Irish 2-10 Parnells 1-14

In a tremendous match at Ruislip on Sunday afternoon, Fulham Irish fought hard to retain the Tipperary Cup but ultimately went down narrowly to the this seasons form team in London, Parnells.

Parnells settled quickly and opened the scoring through Richie Dempsey in the 2nd minute. Fulham Irish equalised through a Noel Nicholson free following a foul on Dave Connolly. Points from Alan Murray, Darragh O'Donovan and Fintan McKeown gave Parnells the lad mid way through the first period. It would be the 26th minute of the half before Connolly scored a minor for Fulham Irish. A great run from Nicholson followed and he duly slotted over. With injury time of the half being played, a line ball from Barry Basquille found Diarmaid Maher who quickly transferred to Garvan O'Callaghan, the Kerry man slipping the ball to Kevin McElroy, who expertly finished to the net to give Fulham Irsh a 2 point lead. O'Donovan reduced the arrears to one point just before the half time whistle.

The Second half started with a swift Fulham Irish attack playing the ball towards Kevin McElroy. Parnells keeper, Aidan McRory fouled him inside the square, the referee stretch his arms and Nicholson did the rest, slotting the penalty to the net. Parnells showed no sign of being affected as the attacked, scoring points through Murray and Mikey Bowler. John Fitzgerald extend ed the lead to 3 points with a fine effort. A big moment in the game followed when an attempted point dropped short but was fumbled by Fulham Irish goalie, Derek Sheridan. In an attempt to rectify the situation fouled the attacker, allowing Dempsey to give Parnells get level again as he dispatched the penalty to the net.

Kevin McElroy fired over to restore the Fulham Irish lead but then Parnells had a good period, taking 3 unanswered points, from Bowler, David O'Sullivan and McKeown. With time running out, another great run from Nicholson produced another point. He would level the game with a couple of minutes left and extra time beckoned.

In the first period of extra time, Fulham Irish owned the ball, creating 10 scoring chances but only convertig 3, a fine point from Captain, Donal Conlon, Nicholson and Connolly. The second period saw Parnells dominant, creating 5 scoring chances and converting 4, 2 points for Dempsey and 1 each for Murray and Bowler.

As well as those mentioned, Colin Reilly, Ken McGrath, Edward O'Hare and Brian O'Reilly played well for Fulham Irish while Ciaran Kelliher, Donal O'Connor, Dennis Donnelly and Colm Fuller done well for Parnells.
