Tir Chonaill Gaels defeated in tough battle    (Tuesday 7-July-2009)

Fulham Irish 0-08 Tir Chonaill Gaels 0-06

Following a day of thunder storms and torrential rain in London, Fulham Irish and Tir Chonaill Gaels took to the field in cold conditions with the surface very greasy. As is expected in games between these teams now, the intensity was high and the chances were at a premium on a night that the back would be king.

After a furious start, Tir Chonaill Gaels settled quickest and took the lead in the 5th minute, a point from Sean Campbell. 2 frees from centre forward Mark Alcorn extended the lead in the 8th and 12th minutes. Fulham Irish were starting to settle now with Dave Connolly firing over following a quick free from Noel Nicholson, opening their account in the 15th minute. Good play down the left by Harry Murphy, Barry McCaffrey and Connolly released Darren Newell to point in the 19th minute. A break from centre back by John Fitzgerald was crudely checked, remonstration with the referee brought the ball further forward before Nicholson step up to level the game. Good defending saw Tir Chonaill Gaels shooting from distance with half chances. The half ended with Connolly breaking clear between two defenders to be one on one with the goalie but alas the shock hit him and he blazed a certain goal chance wide as you like, the half ending all square.

Reenergised by the break, Tir Chonaill Gaels started the 2nd half strongly quickly regaining the lead with efforts from Kevin McMenamin and Alcorn. Fulham Irish had a couple of missed frees from nicholson before he drove over a more difficult effort from the ground in the 11th minute. Brendan O'Shea quickly replied for Tir Chonaill Gaels in the 14th minute of the half.

Fulham Irish were getting into the game now, moving the ball quickly and creating some openings. A foul by Paddy Callaghan allowed Murphy to launched a high ball into the square. As the ball broke, it was punched over the bar by Conor McClean. Winning the kick out and moving the ball to Connolly, he was fouled in the catching act and stepped up himself to swing over the free. Another super catch from Mark McElroy saw the ball played to John Fitzgerald to fire over and give Fulham Irish the lead for the first time. The final ten minutes were all about intense defending as both teams strived to keep the other out, the only score coming from Nicholson.

As well as those mentioned, Derek Sheridan, Gary O'Hare, Edward O'Hare, Eoin Davis, Kevin McElroy and Eamon Cuiv played well for Fulham Irish while Ronan Walsh, Liam Gill, Liam Gavaghan and David Cassidy done well for Tir Chonaill Gaels.
