Ladies draw with Kingdom/Kerry Gaels    (Wednesday 15-July-2009)

Fulham Irish 4-08 Kingdom/Kerry Gaels 4-08

On an evening punctuated by heavy showers, Fulham Irish and Kingdom/Kerry Gaels canceled each other out in this Provincial Junior Championship fixture.

The more experienced Kingdom/Kerry Gaels team settled best and created numerous chances in the opening 10 minutes, somehow managing to miss the majority of the chances before hitting the net with a scrambled effort in the 8th minute. Recovering quickly, Fulham Irish worked the ball upfield with Paula Cuinnea shooting and her shot too strong for the goalkeeper as it fell to the net. Kingdom/Kerry Gaels continued their strong start with a point for Ann Woulfe and a goal and point from Sarah Kelly, both coming from frees.

With 12 minutes gone, the Fulham Irish girls suddenly came to life, firing over 3 quick points, 2 from Jessica Hyde and a fine effort from Marina Quinlan. A point for Linda Cummings, the Kingdom/Kerry gaels full forward from a tight angle followed before the domination of possession by Fulham Irish saw Michelle Murphy, Sarah Allen and Quinlan add points to reduce the deficit. Kelly add another point from a free. Almost immediately good play involving Marieke Johnson, Allen and Quinlan free Murphy on goal and she shot past the keeper to level the game. A strong run by Hyde followed. It was stopped by a foul, which Leah Horan punished with a point to leave the Fulham Irish girls ahead at the break.

The second half started with more strong pressure from Kingdom/Kerry Gaels with Kelly adding another point from a free. A strong run from Quinlan released Murphy on goal again. After miskicking the first time, she rammed the ball to the net. 2 more frees were converted by Kelly to reduce the arrears before Quinlan worked in for another goal to extend the lead to 4 points with 9 minutes of the half gone.

With players getting tired, the chances were starting to dry up. The game would wait nearly 10 minutes for another score. After a couple of near misses, Kingdom/Kerry Gaels secured a kick out and worked through for a goal from Cummings. Hyde finally broke free from her tight marker to score another point to extend the lead to 2 points. A foul on the 21 metre line gave Kelly another. Her effort managed to fall into the corner of the net to give Kingdom/Kerry Gaels the minimum advantage with injury time starting. Fulham Irish carved out the chance to win the game as good play involving Johnson and Quinlan released Murphy on goal. Her powerful shot screwed over the bar and the game ended in a draw, probably the fairest result on the night.

As well as those mentioned, Brigid Doyle, Liz Spelman, Nicola Traynor, Rebecca Taylor, Alison Donnelly and Blathnaid Farrell had good games for Fulham Irish while Doly McPherson, Roisin McEvoy and Joanne McErlean had solid games for kingdom/Kerry Gaels.
