Reserves lose out to St Clarets (Tuesday 12-May-2009)
Fulham Irish Reserves 2-03 St Clarets 3-16
At a windy Greenford on Tuesday evening, the Reserves put in another
battling display before ultimately going down to the fitter and more
cohesive St Clarets outfit.
Having lost the toss, Fulham Irish played into the teeth of the strong
wind and with Kevin McElroy and Ollie McGrath directing things from
midfield played all the football in the first ten minutes, creating 2
goal chances, the worst a miss from veteran Brendan Dolan who managed
to hit the static goalie with the ball in a one on one situation!
This allowed St Clarets to take the lead with a couple of long range
points from John McDermott. The Fulham Irish lads finally got on the
score sheet after good work from McElroy and Dolan, saw the shot from
Dolan rebound to Dermot Flanagan, who volleyed, what looked, expertly
to the net. Flanagan, captain for the evening before his imminent departure to the Southern Hemisphere, provided the moment of the evening when he clumsily fouled the defender but managed to slap him as they got off the ground, causing mayhem and the referee throwing the ball up! A point from an Ollie McKinley followed and with 8 minutes
of the first half remaining, things were going well.
But then, a setback. What looked a routine ball for Willie Fogarty
evaded him and a fumble from Martin Burke left St Clarets with an easy
goal to take. They followed this with a series of 4 points to close the half and take a 7 point lead into the break.
Now playing with the wind, Fulham Irish again started the half
strongly scoring a pointed free from McKinley and a goal from Dolan to
reduce the arrears. Tiredness was setting in however and St Clarets
proceeded to take control of the game as the Fulham Irish lads battled to stay with them. Many of their scores came from the breakdown in play from Fulham Irish. Fulham still managed to create another goal chance. Following good work from Ciaran O'Kane and McElroy, Flanagan was put through but his mishit effort went over the bar.
As well as those mentioned, Mark McVey, Finian McCann and John Enright played well for Fulham Irish.
